Style Spotlight: Jane Birkin

Always Effortless

As a musician and actress, Jane Birkin created a style persona synonymous with chic simplicity. Whereas others dressed in audacious and bold looks, Birkin opted for understated essentials: white t-shirts, straight jeans, ballerina flats, and trench coats.

She wore these key pieces repeatedly, creating an instantly recognizable look that women continue to emulate today.

Making of an Icon

The famous Hermès Birkin dates back to a fortuitous 1984 airplane encounter between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, CEO of Hermès.

During the flight, Birkin complained that stylish bags were often too small for her daily essentials. Dumas, inspired by her commentary, sketched an idea on the back of his airplane sickness bag and showed it to her.

The result? Today’s most coveted handbag.
