Today we present this elegant vintage Baume & Mercier watch from late 1983, once owned by baseball legend and Yankees Hall of Famer Lefty Gomez.

It was presented to him by Henry Kay Jewelers in recognition of his participation in the 50th anniversary of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Its neo-classical style is both elegant and refined. The original dial, adorned with the Baume & Mercier logo commemorating the 50th anniversary of the All-Star Game, is the centerpiece of this watch. Its understated design suggests it was chosen not as a trophy, but as a personal memento, an object precious enough to be worn, not simply stored away.

The engraving on the case back reveals the reason: “50TH ALL-STAR GAME / CHICAGO WHITE SOX / BAUME & MERCIER / JEWELER HENRY KAY.”

This engraving places the watch at the heart of a pivotal moment in baseball history. The 1983 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, held at Comiskey Park in Chicago, marked the 50th anniversary of the All-Star Game.

Lefty Gomez attended not as a mere guest, but as the last living witness to the game’s origins. The last surviving player from the very first All-Star Game in 1933, he had the honor of throwing out the first ceremonial pitch, a symbolic passage between baseball's early stars and the modern era.

This was no ordinary All-Star Game; it was a moment of reflection and continuity, celebrating half a century of baseball and paying tribute to one of the men who helped forge its legend.

The watch presented on this occasion becomes much more than a simple commemorative item: it becomes almost a tangible testament to baseball history.

The fact that it belonged to Mr. Gomez gives it a special human dimension: an object that has somehow traveled from the field to the home, from public glory to private life.

It has all its original parts. We have not polished or retouched it externally; we have left it as Mr. Gomez last used it, with its slight traces of wear and dirt. We've fitted a new strap and included pieces from the old one.

Lefty Gomez:

Vernon Louis "Lefty" Gomez, born November 26, 1908, is considered one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history. Lefty Gomez played his entire 14-year career in the major leagues, first with the New York Yankees (1930-1942) and then with the Washington Senators (1943). Known for his effervescent personality and humor, his talent on the mound played a crucial role in the Yankees' dominance during the 1930s.

Gomez's career was marked by numerous successes and accolades. A six-time All-Star, he was the American League's starting pitcher in the inaugural All-Star Game in 1933, earning that honor four times. During his time with the Yankees, Gomez contributed to their five World Series championships (1932, 1936-1939). His World Series record remains particularly remarkable: six wins and no losses, with an ERA of 2.86 in seven appearances, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure.

In addition to his World Series successes, Gomez led the American League in wins twice (1934 and 1937), strikeouts three times (1933, 1934, and 1937), and ERA twice (1934 and 1937). His 1934 season remains legendary: he dominated the league in wins (26), strikeouts (158), and ERA (2.33), thus earning the pitchers' Triple Crown. Gomez's outstanding performance continued in 1937, with a record of 21 wins and 11 losses, a league-leading ERA of 2.33, and 194 strikeouts, cementing his status as the number one pitcher. He was one of the most brilliant pitchers of his era.

Lefty Gomez's statistics attest to his dominance on the mound. He finished his career with a record of 189 wins and 102 losses, a 3.34 ERA, and 1,468 strikeouts in 2,503 innings pitched. These impressive numbers earned him a unanimous induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

The 1983 Major League Baseball All-Star Game honored Lefty Gomez, the last surviving member of the 1933 All-Star team. He had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch. On August 2, 1987, Gomez and Whitey Ford received commemorative plaques for installation in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park. Gomez's plaque commemorates him as "known for his wit and fastball, as quick with a comeback as he was with a pitch." Despite his advanced age, Gomez attended the ceremony.

Ten years after his death in 1989, The Sporting News ranked him 73rd on its list of the 100 greatest baseball players, and he was nominated to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

He is distinguished not only by his impressive statistics and accolades but also by his lasting influence on the sport. His contribution to the Yankees' success in the 1930s and his memorable presence on and off the field make him an iconic figure in baseball history.
